It's so easy to make fresh, homemade granola at home! All of these recipes are naturally sweetened, cozy, and made with thoughtful, nourishing ingredients. Whether you're looking for a simple yogurt bowl topper, camping snacks, or a back-to-school recipe for your kids, these granolas are the ones we make on repeat.

6 healthy granola recipes on sheet pans and yogurt bowls. this recipe

I remember when I first nailed a granola recipe. It was SO gratifying because I had to test it so many times to get it just right, and once I perfected that formula, I was able to adapt to it so many flavors and textures.

The store-bought granola scene has gotten quite good, and I do have a few that I love. But there's still something so special and fresh about homemade granola, just as there is about homemade zucchini bread or cookies.

Whenever we make it, it usually gets snacked upon or used up in yogurt bowls, but I also love it on top of a homemade steel cut oats or overnight oats. One of my goals for this coming school year is to prep it more for healthy snacks for Andy's son. It's so perfect for that!

Stocking Up on granola ingredients

For granola ingredients, you'll be using a lot of dry pantry goods, which I personally love to buy in bulk when I'm shopping at a place that offers it. It's affordable, oftentimes organic, and it allows you to buy without single-use plastic packaging (yay!).

Otherwise, any of these ingredients you can find and stock up in a way that works for you, is just perfect. And once you have these on hand, you might have enough ingredients to make some homemade kitchen sink granola bars on weeks when you're not making granola.

Dry Pantry Goods

  • Whole rolled oats
  • Quinoa
  • Nuts - almonds, walnuts, pecans, hazelnuts, etc.
  • Seeds - pepitas, sunflowers seeds, chia seeds
  • Dried fruit - dates, golden raisins, raisins, dried cherries, coconut flakes

Natural Sweeteners

I especially love how maple syrup bakes up in granola, but I still keep a few options on hand.

  • Maple syrup
  • Agave
  • Honey
  • Molasses

Buy Local Tip! Maple syrup and honey can often be found both locally and affordably, so I usually buy local if I come across some.

Oils

The three I use most are:

  • Extra virgin coconut oil
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Avocado oil

storing granola

In my experience, homemade granola tastes best when enjoyed within two or three weeks, kept in an airtight container in the pantry. You'll want to make sure it cools completely before storing to avoid any moisture getting trapped in the container.

You can also refrigerate the granola to keep it for up to a month, or freeze it in an airtight container or bag for up to six months. I love using an airtight container, large Weck jar, or Stasher bag to store or freeze granola.

TIPS FOR BIG, CRUNCHY CLUSTERS

After years of baking homemade granola, here's how I get clusters every time:

  1. Layer granola in a thick, yet even layer on the pan (it might feel crowded or packed in, and that's good).
  2. Barely stir halfway through baking. A gentle stir helps with even browning, but we don't want to separate ingredients too much.
  3. Let it cool completely before touching anything (I know it's so tempting to dig right in lol). This helps everything cool into clusters!

Yogurt bowls are always win, as is adding some crunch to overnight oats. Also, I secretly love sprinkling some granola onto my butternut squash soup for a savory-sweet experience (and crunch!).
