This is the all-purpose herb yogurt sauce you need for dipping basically anything! Cooling and packed with fresh herbs, it's there for you as a creamy dip or spread that's ready in 5 minutes.

Yogurt sauce with dill, mint, and other herbs mixed together in a bowl. this recipe

This is our everything yogurt sauce right now! And I mean everything. If you're a ranch dressing person, the same logic applies-it brings an herby, creamy balance to whatever you're eating, whether it's dipped veggies or spicy chicken.

Most recently we've been using it as the primary sauce in creamy cucumber salad for easy weeknight side dishes. We've also done our share of slathering it onto pita sandwiches, dipping dill roasted potatoes into it, and generously scooping it into dinner and lunch bowls. It's the perfect way to use up a bunch of fresh herbs at once, and can also be a crowd pleaser if you serve it as nourishing dip for fresh veggies. Let's make the recipe!

Key Ingredients + Notes

Herb and dill yogurt sauce ingredients.
  • What are the best herbs to use? The only herb I'm going to strongly insist on is dill! It's just next-level delish and gives dill dip vibes. Outside of that, be creative or let your CSA or garden guide you! Use up basil, tarragon, mint, cilantro, parsley, and/or chives. I don't recommend thyme, rosemary, or oregano for this one, as these are hardier herbs that overtake the flavor of the more tender herbs.
  • What is the best yogurt to use? Plain whole milk Greek yogurt will provide the creamiest and richest results. You could also use 2% plain Greek yogurt, but I'd skip the nonfat yogurt here.

Step-by-Step Instructions

Adding fresh herbs to yogurt sauce.

Step 1

Combine herbs, yogurt, lemon juice, salt, and pepper into a bowl.

Mixing lemon herb yogurt sauce together in a bowl.

Step 2

Stir it all together until it's evenly combined.

Yogurt sauce with dill, mint, and other herbs mixed together in a bowl.

Step 3

Serve as a dip with pre-chopped raw veggies, or spread onto pita sandwiches! We also having been loving spreading some onto a plate and layering roast potatoes and chicken over the top, so every bite gets some yogurt sauce.

Tera's Sustainability Tips

  • Use up herbs! If you have more dill to use up, definitely give this reader favorite lemon dill hummus recipe a try. For parsley, try my fresh parsley walnut pesto!
  • Store herbs properly to max out their shelf life. Herbs are notorious for spoiling quickly, especially when not stored properly. If you've had a whole thing of basil go bad within a day or two, I've definitely been there-it's such a bummer! But, over years of cooking seasonally and sustainably, I've found ways to store herbs so that they last, without using single-use plastic storage. Since we'll be using tender herbs in this recipe, most should be stored with stems in a jar or glass of water, like flowers. If you're ready to have a reference guide handy for storing all herbs, grab your copy below!

Description

This creamy yogurt sauce with dill and fresh herbs is tangy, flavorful, and comes together in minutes. Perfect as a dip, dressing, or drizzle for veggies, grain bowls, and more.

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 cup plain whole milk Greek yogurt
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • ½ cup finely chopped fresh tender herbs (include dill + any others, see notes)
  • Scant ½ teaspoon salt (add more to taste, if needed)
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Combine. In a medium bowl, combine the yogurt, lemon juice, herbs, salt, and pepper.
  2. Stir and serve. Stir until evenly mixed together, and taste test to see if it needs more salt to your taste. Once you've perfected it, serve the sauce on the side of any meal for dipping, (or dollop on top), spread onto pitas for sandwiches, or use as a sauce for bowl recipes or veggie salads.

Notes

  1. Tender herbs. These might include mint, basil, cilantro, parsley, chives, or tarragon. Any combination will be delicious-just use what you have or can easily find!
  2. Garlic. I tend to leave garlic out because I'm sensitive to it, but I love the flavor. If you're also a garlic lover, feel free to grate up a clove and stir it in as well!
  3. Storage instructions. Store herbed dill yogurt sauce in an airtight container in the fridge for up to five days. If I'm meal prepping this sauce, I make it directly in the container I'll be storing it in. Fewer dirty dishes, yay!
